Martin Belič is an internationally acclaimed Slovenian flutist whose artistry combines technical brilliance with a distinctive lyrical voice. Since 2007 he has made his home in Munich, where he serves as Co-Principal Flutist of the Munich Philharmonic under Lahav Shani and as Professor of Flute at the Leopold Mozart Center of the University of Augsburg. His refined tone, expressive phrasing, and wide-ranging repertoire have established him as one of the most respected flutists of his generation.

Born in Maribor, Slovenia, Belič began his musical training at the Conservatory of Music with Prof. Violeta Ozvatič before continuing his studies at the University Mozarteum Salzburg. There he graduated with distinction in 2003 under the guidance of the renowned Slovenian flutist Prof. Irena Grafenauer and pursued additional studies in music pedagogy with Prof. Herta Mergl. He went on to complete a master’s degree, again with distinction, and later undertook postgraduate studies with Prof. Michael Martin Kofler. His artistic development was further shaped through masterclasses with leading flutists including Michael Martin Kofler, Matej Zupan, Janne Thomsen, and Eckart Haupt.

Martin has been recognized with numerous awards at national and international competitions in Slovenia, Italy, Austria, and Germany. In 2000 he received a scholarship from the Slovenian Ministry of Culture as well as the prestigious Dr. Roman Klasinc Prize for outstanding musical achievements. He was also supported by SMART-COM, Rotary Club Ljubljana, and the Gallus Foundation, where he later became the first official ambassador and an advocate for young talented musicians. In 2006 he was awarded a scholarship from “Live Music Now,” the foundation established by Yehudi Menuhin in Salzburg. His competition successes include First Prize at the Intermusica Birkfeld International Competition and the 2nd International Theobald Böhm Competition for Flute and Alto Flute, where he now frequently returns as a jury member and chairman.

In addition to his orchestral work with the Munich Philharmonic, Belič has appeared as soloist and chamber musician across Europe, collaborating with ensembles such as the Slovenian Philharmonic, the Zagreb Philharmonic, the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra, the Munich Radio Orchestra, and the Chamber Orchestra of the Munich Philharmonic. His performances have brought him together with distinguished conductors including En Shao, Karen Kamenšek, Olari Elts, Živa Ploj Peršuh, Vjekoslav Šutej, Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici, and many others. As a guest musician he has also played with leading orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian State Opera, the SWR and WDR Symphony Orchestras, and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra.

His discography reflects both his versatility and his commitment to expanding the flute repertoire. His debut recording, Zelenci (2005), featured Bizet/Borne’s Carmen Fantasy with the Symphony Orchestra of the National Theatre Maribor. This was followed by Young Virtuosos 1 (2009), featuring Nielsen’s Flute Concerto with the Slovenian Radio Orchestra, and Music from the Fire (2011) with Trio FUOCO. His later albums include Opus (2015), dedicated to the works of Theobald Böhm, Golden Flute (2019), Horizons (2022), and most recently Baroque Echoes (2024), recorded with the Slovenian Baroque Ensemble.

Alongside his performing career, Belič is deeply committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of musicians. From 2010 to 2021 he served as assistant to Prof. Michael Martin Kofler at his international masterclass in Klagenfurt, and since 2012 he has led his own summer flute school in Slovenska Bistrica, Slovenia. He is a frequent guest professor at masterclasses across Europe and Asia, admired for his ability to inspire students with both technical precision and artistic imagination. Since 2016 he has also been actively involved in the Music Association of Upper and Lower Bavaria (MON), sharing his expertise with young talents and colleagues alike.
